PORTFOLIO

Over the years we have been fortunate to work on some very interesting projects for a diverse range of clients who have had special and individual requirements.

Some of these include:

Pencarrow -  www.pencarrow.net

This lovely table is situated in Pencarrow, an upmarket Bed and Breakfast over looking Lake Wakatipu.  Bill and Kari Moers wanted their antique Billiards table made by John Bennett and Co, London restored without compromise and entrusted the work to Snooker Shop.

The cushion woodwork was rather shabby but they were anxious that the original manufacturers transfers be retained, so by working carefully I was able to restore the original finish by hand shellacing or "french polishing" without damaging the orginal badging.

The non-original cushion panels which concealed the bolts were discarded and replaced with cushion buttons which where replicated to a design that reflects the era.

The cushions and cloth on the table were upgraded to Tournament standard and the table bed trued up to provide accurate playing conditions.
A beautiful table in a magnificent setting.

Nelson Private Home

This is a "one off" table built for a house overlooking Tahunanui Beach.  As the owners reside in the USA most of the year they wanted an American format table to play a 2 ¼" ball.  Their architect, David Wallace of Upstream Design specified the design which reflects the style of the house - native timbers elegantly worked in a simple but beautifully proportioned fashion.

Timber used is Matai with Rewarewa inlays and the legs feature a key hole motif negative detail.

This home was placed first in the Master Builders - Home of the Year 2001 in the unlimited price category and went on to be the overall winner.

A Flash Bach  (Very Flash!!)

Snooker Shop constructed this 9ft table in American Oak timber to match the joinery in this luxury holiday home.  Situated in Akaroa as a Southern Hemisphere retreat for an English family this dwelling is reputed to be the most expensive built in Canterbury. In the very "clubby" surrounds of this quintessential billiards room, the table is "at home" with leather settees, teak floor, beautiful heavy drapes and   canopy lighting.  A classical table in a very classical setting.

It was a pleasure to see this completed table in the quietly understated luxury of this superb home.

Northland Retirement Retreat

The Northland owner of this table looked all over New Zealand to find a table maker before finding Snooker Shop.  We were able to "see" his vision, a beautifully proportioned full sized table with absolute attention to detail.  And developing his dream retirement property meant  he was equipping it with first class fittings so second best did not cut it.

The client had a lifetime of supplying imported timbers to the furniture and joinery trades and understood exactly how fine craftsmanship and well balanced detailing could showcase the beauty of timber.  His chosen wood was Bubinga which is also know as African Rosewood.  With larger than usual legs (timber supply was no problem!!) this table has an impressive presence and the rich rosewood colour is a perfect counterpoint to the classic green cloth and brass fittings.  A privilege to create.

Historic Family Home Dunedin

This home was built by a member of the Hudson family who owned the confectionery and biscuit empire, Cadbury Fry Hudson.  Styled in the arts and crafts tradition this grand family home has been faithfully restored by the present owners.

The last area to receive attention was the Billiards room, where their "Bird and Co" Billiards table has sat since being installed when new by my grandfather Edgar.  Originally I was requested to dismantle the table to allow the floor to be sanded.  The owners quickly appreciated that they could achieve something special with this room and decided to "go the whole hog" with the table.

We retained the original, extra long rail pocket runners with their red rubber tubing on the rails to keep the authentic look and upgraded all the playing aspects of the table to competition standard.  With the table repolished the whole package was reassembled in the completely renovated  room.

This ornate and unusual table with its elongated leg knees and carved panelling looks absolutely splendid and "at home" in its quietly sumptuous  surroundings overlooking the harbour in Dunedin - one of the prettiest small cities in the world  - I am biased!!  it's my birthplace!
